Rules for accurate tracking

01

Be consistent with naming

Always use lowercase. facebook, Facebook, and fb.com appear as three separate sources.

02

Use dashes, not spaces

Spaces cause encoding issues. Use spring-sale or spring_sale instead.

03

Keep a central record

Use the History and Templates tabs to track all UTM links your team creates.

04

Shorten for social

Use a link shortener like Bitly for cleaner URLs. UTM parameters still pass through.

[03] FAQ

Common questions

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Yes. Google, google, and GOOGLE are tracked as separate sources. Standardize on lowercase.

Do UTMs affect SEO?

No. Search engines recognize UTM tags and index the base URL without parameters.

Can I use UTMs for internal links?

Never. Internal UTMs overwrite the original traffic source, corrupting your attribution data.
